McGill Food and Dining Services sells reusable bottles at cost as an alternative to buying individual bottles of water
McGill Redbird Sports Shop (at Athletics downtown) will be selling reusable bottles at a 10% discount on squeeze bottles and stainless steel bottles March 10 ONLY
Macdonald Campus Bookstore will be selling their collapsible water bottles at a discount for $4 each for this event

Dear Campus Community,

Our Faculty and campus will face many challenges in the next few years…and we want to be prepared.

We need your insights, suggestions and ideas to help us respond to the challenges.

Next Thursday, January 20, you are invited, between 3:30 and 6, to bring your experience and ideas to a ‘Café Courtyard’ that will be set up in the MS Foyer, Faculty Lounge and Link. There will be six separate ‘cafes’, each devoted to discussion of a theme, as you see below. In each café you can share your ideas with others and record your insights so they can be fed into the planning for the Faculty.

This is an event for the whole Mac Community: students, staff and professors. You can visit all of the cafés or just a few. You can come for the whole time or just half an hour. You can arrive any time and leave when you have done all you want to. There will be food and drink available. Everyone will be there! It will be fun!

So please put this in your agenda for next Thursday, give some thought to themes in the café posters below and talk it up with your friends and colleagues. We will send more details early next week.

people of many different sexual orientations and gender identities
• To affirm the sexual and gender diversity of the community; and
• To raise awareness of how forms of prejudice such as heterosexism, homophobia, and
transphobia can adversely affect spaces of work and learning at McGill

Seeking Adventure? Interested in Conservation?

On Monday, November 15th at the Downtown Campus at 12:40pm in Brown Student Services Building (3600 McTavish), Room 5001; and at the Macdonald Campus at 4:00pm in Macdonald-Stewart Building, Faculty Lounge (MS2-022), Dr. Justin Hines of the field research organization Operation Wallacea will be giving a presentation about opportunities available for students next summer. Choice of location includes the cloud forests and coral reefs of Honduras, the lush tropical rainforest and immense coral reefs of Indonesia, the rivers and estuaries of the Peruvian Amazon, the bush of northeastern South Africa, the desert & coral reefs of the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt and the coral reefs of Cuba. For 2011, we are very excited to announce our new projects in Guyana
and Mexico!

Opportunities include:

Learning to dive on an uninhabited tropical island among world class coral reefs
Jungle trekking in pristine un-surveyed rainforests, seeking out species new to science
Working on sustainable community development projects with the locals (Indonesia, Honduras)
Monitoring turtle nesting and behavioral patterns (Cuba, Peru)
Surveying birds and reptiles at a World Heritage Site (Egypt)
Surveying river dolphins, manatees, uakari and spider monkeys and macaws along the Peruvian Amazon
Performing big game counts and assessing bush habitat (South Africa)

There are over 40 projects available for research assistants and over 150
individual research projects. So come to the talk and hear more about what

Tree Planting - May 1st

In partnership with a Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue Earth day project, we will be planting 250 small trees at the Macdonald Farm on Saturday 1 May. The tree planting is part of an ongoing trend to naturalize some of the Macdonald Campus lawn areas. This is a great opportunity for our Campus Community members and families to volunteer and join together in making our campus an even greener and more environmentally friendly area.

Volunteers are requested to confirm by reply email if possible, bring a landscape spade if you have one, and to meet at the Macdonald Farm Center at 08h30 on Saturday 1 May. Please also remember to bring liquid refreshment.

A Day Without Shoes!
It’s Hard Without Shoes

Through everyday encounters with domestic poverty, we are reminded to appreciate having food and shelter, but most of us all but forget about our feet. Food, shelter, AND shoes facilitate life’s fundamentals. Imagine a life without shoes; constantly aware of the ground in front of you, suffering regular cuts and scrapes, tending to infection after each walk, and enduring not only terrain, but heat and cold.

The problem is large, but the solution is simple. Wearing shoes and practicing basic hygiene can prevent both infection and disease due to unsafe roads and contaminated soil. By imagining a life barefoot, we can all contribute to the awareness of these conditions. On April 8th, communities, campuses, organizations, and individuals are banding together to walk barefoot for One Day Without Shoes.

Since early February it's become clear that the Ministry of Education is pursuing significant tuition increases for all students. The only uncertainty is when; Fall 2010?

This will most likely affect QUEBEC, OUT-OF-PROVINCE and INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS!

This means more student debt, more hardships for lower-income students and a less accessible post-secondary education.

Come demonstrate against impending tuition hikes at 1pm on April 1st at Philips Square (Downtown Montreal, in front of The Bay).

If you check out the website below and click on the first link you can see the results of the latest NSSE survey of undergraduate experience at McGill.

We fared pretty bad overall - the NSSE is an outside organization that offers this survey to universities in North America. They then tabulate the results and compare us to each other, especially in relation to ones of similar size/also research intensive.

It's a bit lengthy/wordy but I definitely recommend checking it out; if you've ever felt disregarded as an undergrad or not as valued as you should be, you won't be surprised by these results!

Help your Profs become the Best they can Be!

When: March 8th - March 12th 2010

How to OPTIMIZE the POTENTIAL for SUCCESS:

- Be specific
- Provide practical suggestions/solutions
-Realize that only positive feedback is likely to stimulate change/improvement

How to FAIL MISERABLY and WASTE TIME:

-List ALL your prof's flaws & weaknesses
-Tell them how little you think they are likely to be good profs
-Don’t give them any useful suggestions
-NOTE: By following the above items (and other similar ones), neither you nor your profs will benefit from the process

What TO DO:

Ask your profs to reserve 10-15min of class time for these evaluations
Select a Moderator and Secretary for each class
Discuss POSITIVE suggestions for your Profs and TAs to improve the course(see the MID TERM TIPS also attached to this MCSS listserv email)
Record the best ideas
Report to your Profs immediately after the class

It's important to get POSITIVE/CONSTRUCTIVE suggestions to your Professors and TAs to improve the course!

The Mac Arts and Crafts club has been honoured with the quest for art pieces that could be placed* in the staircases of the MS building. We will accept murals and, upon approval, a set of enlarged photographs.

All students are invited to participate and the student community will vote for five finalists. The deadline is March 2nd.

Here are the guidelines:
1.The art piece must represent Mac in general. Not a specific year or generation but an overall reflection of the campus identity (example; community garden, farm, etc.).
2.That’s it!

Murals: You must submit a draft (and this is the finished art piece, not a sketch; only not full-sized) of at least the size of an A0 paper (9” by 11”). If you become a finalist, you will be asked to reproduce your art piece on a larger scale.
Pictures: The pictures should be taken in high-quality format (no cell phone, no low pixel) and submitted electronically. If you are selected as a finalist, you will be required to print a copy.

There is no limit to the number of art pieces that you can contribute. We’re really looking forward to everybody’s input!

We also want EVERYBODY to participate so if you are low in funds for your art supplies, email the A&C club and we will provide you with art supplies.

I hope this note finds you well. I am writing to you from Eleuthera, the Bahamas, where I am working as an intern at the Cape Eleuthera Institute and The Island School. There are many Hatians now living on Eleuthera, and it has been a sad week for their community, as they await communication from their families in Port-au-Prince. I realize that the disaster in Haiti might seem distant to you in Quebec, but I hope you will take a moment to understand that your contribution in this relief effort will be appreciated by individuals and their families who are going through a very tough situation. I will be proud to tell my friends on Eleuthera that my university community is taking action.

After our meeting today with Dean Madramootoo MCSS decided that we needed to get moving on establishing a replacement for food services. Therefore MCSS would like to invite Bill Pageau, Joe Martins and Peter Knox, along with any interested students, to a meeting in January.
This meeting needs to be held as soon as the semester begins in January in oder to be as quick as possible.
We need to schedule this meeting to discuss renovating CC207 (the conference room on the second floor of the CC) into a hot food service area. As of right now MCSS is looking into this as the main replacement for food services. We would like construction to begin in Spring 2010 at the same time as the Dietetics Food Labs therefore we need to make a plan as soon as possible.

URGENT: Sustainability Fund Referendum: READ ME

Summary of Sustainability Fund Proposal

The MCSS vote for this fund will occur Tuesday to Thursday, November 24 – 26 from 9am to 3pm in the MS lobby, and at the MCSS counter (only for FMT students). Make sure to vote, especially since the outcome of this vote will affect your student fees next semester.

This fund is intended to be used for any sustainability projects proposed for McGill from either campus. Any parties – i.e. individuals or groups – may submit proposals to the Sustainability Fund Working Group.

The ‘Sustainability Fund Working Group’ handles acceptance or rejection of proposals, and consists of:
4 students: 2 nominated by SSMU, 1 by MCSS, 1 by PGSS
4 faculty members or administrators nominated by McGill

If passed, the fees will begin collecting in January for a 3-year trial period.

Sources of funding are:
> Student contributions: a $0.50 per credit “non-opt-outable” fee for the duration of the trial period, up to 15 credits. This means a maximum of $7.50 per semester for six semesters. After the trial period the fund will go to referendum again with reviews of its effectiveness.
> Matching funds: Including, but not limited to, contributions through internal and external donations, the University, and grants from external agencies and non-governmental organizations.

Estimates of fund:
> From Macdonald campus (i.e. MCSS) - $20 000 annually
> From SSMU and PGSS - $350 000
> Matched by University, et al
> Totalling approximately $800 000 annually

Applications will be received throughout the year. In addition, the fund will be used to hire a Sustainability Coordinator who will work to synchronize the projects happening at McGill and ensure that similar projects are accomplished cooperatively.

Project proposal criteria includes:

All projects should include an element of engagement of students, staff, faculty and administrators

All applicants must answer and will be evaluated based on answers to the following questions

How does the project accelerate the creation of a culture of sustainability on campus?
Who are the stakeholders involved, and in what capacity?
Have these stakeholders directly affected by the proposed project been consulted?
How does this project fit under the purview of the CSF, rather than other sources of funding?

Energy Conservation Projects must have predictable outcomes, with priority given to those with short pay-back periods and/or important reductions in the emission of green house gases or other pollutants,
If approved, the results or measurable change created by the project must be communicated with the community.

Project applications are favoured if it:

Improves the coordination, development and implementation of applied student research projects;
Advances existing sustainability initiatives on campus;
Increases the resources for collaboration between students, professors, staff and administrators, and empowers all stakeholders to engage in sustainable initiatives on campus and in the community;
Demonstrates innovation in design and implementation of sustainable practices.
Improved infrastructure mechanisms for a reduction in the use and consumption of energy and material resources, in recognition of the limited capacity of the biosphere to accommodate human activities;
Transferability of project to other areas of the university, with high project visibility and/or impact;
Use of locally developed and/or sourced products and services

- Be specific
- Provide practical suggestions/solutions
-Realize that only positive feedback is likely to stimulate change/improvement

How to FAIL MISERABLY and WASTE TIME:

-List ALL your prof's flaws & weaknesses
-Tell them how little you think they are likely to be good profs
-Don’t give them any useful suggestions
-NOTE: By following the above items (and other similar ones), neither you nor your profs will benefit from the process

What TO DO:

Ask your profs to reserve 10-15min of class time for these evaluations
Select a Moderator and Secretary for each class
Discuss POSITIVE suggestions for your Profs and TAs to improve the course(see the MID TERM TIPS also attached to this MCSS listserv email)
Record the best ideas
Report to your Profs immediately after the class

It's important to get POSITIVE/CONSTRUCTIVE suggestions to your Professors and TAs to improve the course!

International Day for Climate Action

Saturday is the International Day for Climate Action. In this spirit, volunteers across Canada have been organizing an event called Fill The Hill. This event takes place all Saturday on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, where youth will gather to demonstrate, perform, run workshops, and have a great time. This is in partnership with the Powershift conference occurring the same weekend. The overall theme is influencing our government officials to make binding agreements at the Copenhagen discussions in December!

In this spirit, we are organizing two events. This Friday October 23 at 11:25AM out front of the CC we are going to have a massive PHOTO SHOOT! We need as MANY people as possible to make sure our message has IMPACT:). We're using a Nikon D60 camera (pretty schnazz, eh?) to capture the spirit of our students with premade banners that will be promoting green jobs, taking climate action and reaching sustainable atmospheric CO2 levels.

These banners will then be taken to The Hill! On Saturday October 24 a bus will leave the CC at 9am and go directly to Parliament Hill to join the thousands of other students who will have already gathered. The bus will leave Ottawa at 9pm. You can have a place on this bus for only $5.00! Sign up at the MCSS counter starting this Tuesday.
If you can't make it to Ottawa that day, there are events going on downtown Montreal as well! Check out 350mtl.wordpress.com for more information.

Dr. Wouter van Hoven and Vets in the Wild

On October 22, AESUS is honoured to present Dr. Wouter Van Hoven, who will be coming to Macdonald campus to give a talk about wildlife conservation and veterinary medicine in South Africa and the Vets in the Wild program. Dr. Van Hoven is the director of the Center for Wildlife Management at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, as well as the director of EcoLife Expeditions, an organization offering hands-on study abroad trips to Africa such as Vets in the Wild, Vet Nurses in the Wild, and Wildlife Management expeditions.

If you are interested in veterinary medicine, wildlife conservation, or environmental studies, you definitely do not want to miss this presentation by a recognized leader in the field of wildlife management throughout Africa. Among other things, Dr. Van Hoven has studied the management of wild elephant populations, the economics of wildlife ranching, the management of wildlife diseases, and spearheadedOperation Noah's Ark, an organization which re-establishes populations of wild animals in areas which have been devastated by war, drought, or poachers.

This three-hour presentation will take place on Thursday October 22 at 5:30 p.m. in Raymond 2-045. As there is a limited number of seats, please contact AESUS at aesusatmac@gmail.com to reserve your spot. Refreshments will be served!

MCSS is already working on lots of plans for the coming year.

Over the summer the most exciting work we've been doing is creating this brand spankin' new website to better our communication! We hope to add lots of content year-round.

The most updated information on the Cafeteria development is that the funds will likely not become available until next April for construction to begin on the renovation into the new Dietetics Food Labs. The Ceilidh will be affected by these renovations for an estimated 3 weeks (but knowing how construction projects go, we're guessing 5 weeks at least) and will be closed during that time. There will be a new lighting system installed in the Ceilidh as a part of the construction.

An initiative of the Environmental Advisor from last winter's term is the MACTION group which will come to fruition this fall semester. This group is designed to connect all the student clubs and associations on campus in order to create a united front for interaction with the faculty, and to increase awareness of events being run by different groups.

Over the past few months, MCSS members handled the summer version of Happy Belly - a student group whose goal is reducing the amount of food waste on a local scale by distributing close-to-expiry goods from West Island grocery stores. Come by the MS lobby on Tuesday nights or during the day on Wednesday to get your fill of bakery and produce items!

The Macdonald Campus Students' Society represents the interests of all diploma, graduate and undergraduate students of the Macdonald Campus of McGill University.

Established in 1914, the MCSS has since been involved in all campus activities including both social and academic affairs, club coordination and doing whatever possible to influence University policies in ways that they may best serve the student body. As such, the MCSS is represented on dozens of McGill University committees and working groups.

The MCSS currently employs three full-time employees as well as a number of part-time positions, which are open to students of Macdonald campus. These positions include bar staff and office assistants. Financing for day-to-day operations depend mainly on student fees and bar and bookstore revenues.

Planning and policies are adopted and implemented by the 18 core members of the Students' Council. The council meets every two weeks. All students and staff are welcome to attend Council meetings.

The governing body of the MCSS is it's executive. All positions are open to Macdonald Campus students. Elections are held near the end of each academic year. Further information regarding the elections may be obtained along with nomination forms at the MCSS reception desk.

Student participation is a must in order for the MCSS to continue to operate. Students are encouraged to approach the MCSS with any questions or ideas they might have. Anyone who wishes to organize their own club or activity is also encouraged to approach the MCSS for both financial and administrative aid.
